Thursday 28th September
This evening I attended a meetup event called ‘Changemakers: Creating a Better Tomorrow’. The name followed the title of the book ‘Changemakers’ by Maria Giudice, who was the keynote speaker at this event.
I took some notes of the points I found the most interesting from Giudice’s talk.
“Treat every problem like a design problem”
Giudice said she worked at Autodesk but was forced out and took that as an opportunity to research and interview people in those positions. She wrote changemakers to give insights on real people who learned on the job and made mistakes.
“Leverage the power of design in evening you do”
Design can be a very powerful tool. It is involved in everything in the world around you. You can apply the same design-thinking you use in your work, for everything.
“The book, Changemakers, is important because the world has changed. We live in a world that it is more inclusive and complex. You need to be able to adapt”
Worldview problems require design-thinking. Adaptability is always important, nothing will ever stay the same for long. Big problems require a holistic approach which is often used in design.
When did the awakening to look at cultural issues instead of technical design work?
When she moved to California to redesign Yellow Pages she had to learn how to design maps so she always had to adapt.
When she had to manage people and got into leadership. She was required to lead and get clients. If she doesn't know something she'll work with collaborators. Which she thinks is really important “you can't design without other people”
Tell us the history of the term changemaker for you?
